Fall has Fallen

With the recent cold blast (we saw it as low as 22F) and the intense winds, we thought we better check out the Fall Colors to see where we were. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the fall colors were mostly on the ground rather than on the trees.

We’ve barely begun to run our rounds of our favorite haunts for Changing of the Leaves… but as it turns out, we may already be too late. It happens every year. It goes from hot to cold, and there definitely is a chill in the air, particularly with the high winds. It seems Winter is already here.

If you are hoping to catch the change of season…. better hurry out, or it will be the change to Snow that we will be catching next.

SnowFall

Before Fall Colors have even popped yet, we got our first snowfall. Fall Colors dropped against the blanket of fresh snow made the maple leaves in their varying color stand out.

I love the contrast of color Fall brings, with the green Pines, yellowing Oaks, and emerging reds amidst the scattered Maples. It’s a potpourri of color and textures.

The snow just adds another dimension in this already gorgeous time in our myriad of seasons we get to enjoy.

Fall is in the air

We went out to check on Fall Colors, but it’s still a little early for this neck of the woods. Maybe next week will yield more color.

For now, we were happy to walk through the woods and take in the crisp air… as was this little squirrel we found.

Winter is coming. Storms are on the horizon, and we have already had our first snow. We’ll take it. Our burnt forest can certainly use a good soaking.

We’ll make another trek next week to check on colors again. It’s all good.

First Fall

It seems too early, not even in October yet, but there is a definite chill in the air and you can feel winter is coming. So we decided to do a scouting trip to check out Fall Colors.

It’s a strange year, as some leaves are just turning from their resident bright green to shades of pale green. Other maples are in full color and even falling to the ground floor.

It certainly isn’t in full color, as the leaves are patchy only in some areas. There’s no denying it though… it has started early, with more to come. I love the mosaic tapestries that the leaves and tangle of trees weaves. It’s fascinating to watch this myriad of color dot the landscape.

It’s always fun and challenging to try to capture this awesome season and convey it’s many splendors.

Lockett Meadow

One of the easiest and most beautiful fall color outings to get to outside of the ‘big city’ is Lockett Meadow. It’s only 20 minutes from Flagstaff and yields awesome concentrations of full color yellowing aspens.

The characteristic white trunks and silver dollar yellow leaves make these aspen fields stand out in their stunning beauty. It’s a great place to go for the day, for a picnic, and just soak in nature at it’s finest.

It’s been an early fall. I wrote about it first here. As such the leaves are already starting to dissipate. Compounded by our gusty winds, the leaves are definitely falling as we are getting ready for winter. But for now we are enjoying the last hurrah of what has been a gorgeous Fall here on the mountain.

Leaf Peeping

Fall cometh early to Northern AZ. I have told anyone that would listen, winter is coming. It’s getting cold early and fast. We’ve already had overnight lows below freezing. So with it, the leaves are popping. We have been out several times to see them, and plan on several more trips. I think October 1 is the earliest I have ever seen this abundance of color. Usually it’s not until at least 2nd or 3rd week of October. My guess is by then we’ll be taking photos of snow instead of leaves.

But we’re loving it. The beauty is incredible. I don’t know how I every lived in the valley without getting the 4 seasons. I’m addicted… and love it.

Talk about photographic fodor. The color variations and possibilities are stunning. We packed a lunch and had an amazing view amidst the burst of color we found ourselves in.
